County Open - Newtonmore - Results 2nd October

For our final open of the year the weather was again wet but it was not windy and it was not cold.  Only 23 of the original field of 34 played and the rain did ease and finally stopped for those who played later and when everyone was finished the sun came out.  The course was quite waterlogged in places but the greens were good and seemed to drain well.  Needless to say those who played later came in with the best scores.

Scratch - Nia Morrison (Carrbridge) - 83

1st Silver - Sally Rowan (Inverness) (19) 75
2nd Silver - Anne Rose (Muir of Ord) (20) 77

1st Bronze - Doreen McCaig (Forres) (24) 72
2nd Bronze - Morag James (Forres) (22) 80

Silver Aggregate Trophy - Sally Rowan
Bronze Aggregate Trophy - Doreen McCaig

The final County Open of the year will be at Newtonmore on Sunday 2nd October 2011 which will be followed by the AGM.  We are hoping the AGM will take place between 4pm and 5pm.  This will depend on the number of entries we have for the competition so early applications would be appreciated.  Also, if you are unable to stay for the AGM please let me have your apologies even if you intend to play in the competition.  Fingers crossed that we will be blessed with better weather than we had at Kinloss today.

COUNTY OPEN AND VETS TROPHY - KINLOSS 14th Septemer 2011

With strong winds and heavy showers for most of the day, sixteen stalwarts managed to complete the 18 holes at Kinloss today 14th September, which was a great achievement as the Vets Trophy has not been won since 2007.  In 2008 and 2010 there were not enough entries to warrant running the competition and in 2009 the weather was so bad the course became unplayable and the competition had to be abandoned.

Despite the atrocious weather today several ladies managed to return some very good scores:-

1st Scratch - Susan MacVicar (Gairloch) - 86
1st Silver - Jeani Hunter (Bonar Bridge) - (19) 75
2nd Silver - Sally Rowan (Inverness) - (19) 78
3rd Silver - Nia Morrison (Carrbridge ) (9) 79
1st Bronze - Doreen McCaig (Forres) - (24) 73
2nd Bronze - Pauline Cronin (Forres) - (27) 77

Congratualtions to all those who completed the course and to Jeani Hunter who won the Vets Trophy.

The winner of the Magic Squares was Linda Offin from Bonar Bridge.  There were two prizes Nos 64 and 88 and Linda had both of them.

Many thanks to Kinloss Country Golf Club for allowing us courtesy of their course.

Kelsey wins Under-21's for Fourth Year in a Row

Congratulations to Kelsey MacDonald for winning the Scottish Under-21 girls' stroke-play championship for a record fourth year in a row by the commanding margin of six strokes at Cardross Golf Club on Friday 29th July.  Kelsey outclassed her contemporaries despite going into the tournament on a low, having failed - not by much - to be among the 18 qualifiers at Panmure for the Ricoh British Women's Open Championship at Carnoustie.

That perhaps explained her opening round of one-over-par 75 in the Junior Women's Championship which left her joint eighth. But Kelsey banished the blues in no uncertain fashion after that. She covered the remaining 36 holes in eight under par with a pair of 70s for a seven-under-par winning total of 215.

She is a Great Britain and Ireland international these days and over the final two days at Cardross she played like one.

Northern Counties' Girls' Championship 2011

It was disappointing that only four girls took part in the Northern Counties' Gils' Championship at Forres today 18th July 2011.

Despite the poor forecast the weather was fine and ideal for golf.  Congratulations to Annabelle Brown from Nairn Dunbar who was the clear winner with a gross score of 86.  Well done also to Kirsty McBeath from Forres who won the net trophy with a 77.  The CSS for the day was 74 and the competition was reduction only.  Kirsty McBeath reduced her handicap from 36 to 35.

In addition Anne Rose organised a 7-hole competition for the three youngsters from Muir of Ord, which was won by Sophie Fraser.

All the youngsters received a certificate and a ball marker in recognition of their achievement.

Everyone enjoyed the competition and agreed that they would be entering the McDermott Trophy which will be held at Muir of Ord on Wednesday 10th August at the same time as the County Open.  Hopefully a few more girls will take part in this competition.

Many thanks to Anne Rose for all her hard work.

Jamboree - Inchmarlo - 2011

It is now two weeks since we played in the Jamboree.  The weather was not kind to us - it was dull, dark and dreich with much rain, making the course very heavy and long.

We lost all three matches but that does not reflect the good golf that was played. The three new team members did their best and in some cases were only narrowly beaten. The more experienced members of the team played well and had good wins, especially Hannah who had a 6 and 5 win over Ailsa Summers. Eilidh and Sammy made a good foursomes team and won their matches. Cara and Jenny both played well and were able to score points but not enough!

We can't win them all but will be back next year at Monifieth to try!

North of Scotland Championship - Semi Finals and Finals 7th July 2011

For the final day of these championships the weather was mixed in the morning but turned out really well in the afternoon.

In the semi finals for the handicap Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) beat Kimberly Beveridge (Aboyne) 3 and 2. Fiona Hay (Deeside) beat Eileen Mauchline (Newmacher) on the 19th.  This was a really close match with Fiona being one down going into the 18th and she won the 18th and 19th.

In the scratch section Laura Murray (Alford) beat Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) 3 and 1 and Sammy Vass (Tain) beat Rebecca Wilson (Carnoustie Ladies) 6 and 5.

From left Sammy Vass (Tain), Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), Laura Murray (Alfrod), Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) and Fiona Hay (Deeside)
The handicap section of the finals in the afternoon had a heavy shower to start with then sunshine all the way.  Fiona Hay stormed away and was 4 up at the turn and finally beat Carol Wilson 7 and 6.  We are grateful to the Lady Captain of Nairn Jane Rhodes for acting as referee in this final.

The scratch final was not won so easily with only one shot between Laura Murray and Sammy Vass for most of the game.  Laura went 2 up at the 15th and Sammy holed a long putt at the 17th to draw one back and they halved the 18th for Laura to win the championship and the Gifford Trophy.

The scratch final was ably refereed by club President Ronald Gordon.

Sammy Vass with Thomson Tankard and Laura Murray with Gifford Trophy
Our grateful thanks go to The Nairn Golf Club for agreeing to host this prestigious event.

After a few call offs, 76 players took part in this championship which will be held at Blairgowrie next year.

Well done to everyone.

County Open Results - Gairloch 22nd May 2011

Despite the high winds and heavy showers, some very good results were returned at Gairloch on Sunday.

Lynne Fraser our vice-captain had an excellent gross score of 77 winning the scratch prize.

In the silver division, Val Wright (15) from Forres beat Sandra Hooker (15) from Muir of Ord on countback, both carding 70 net.

In the bronze division, Jo Powell (28) from Gairloch had a 69 net with Catherine Mackay (24) from Muir of Ord beating Joan Darroch (21) from Fortrose & Rosemarkie on countback with 74 net.

Jo Powell, the secretary and captain at Gairloch, who has just recovered from a wrist injury, was originally not playing and agreed to stand in at the last minute when someone dropped out.

Despite the weather most of the players enjoyed the day and we would like to thank Gairloch for their hospitality.

Kelsey wins best qualifying aggregate cup
Congratualtions to Cara Gruber, Kelsey Macdonald, Hannah McCook and Sammy Vass for qualifying in the Scottish Women's Amateaur Golf Championship at Machrihanish.

Hannah McCook lost out to Eilidh Briggs in the second round of the match play.  In the first round Sammy Vass lost to Megan Briggs and Cara Gruber lost to Rachel McQueen.

After reaching the final for the third year running, Louise Kenny from Pitreavie beat Eilidh Briggs to become this year's champion.

Adult/Girl Foursomes at Torvean

Eight pairs entered the Adult/Girl Foursomes at Torvean on Sunday 8th May when the weather was a definite improvement on last year when we played at Invergordon.  Most of the time the sun was shining but we did encounter some rain for about three holes.

It was really encouraging to see so many young girls taking part who will, hopefully, become part of the County squad in the future.

I played with Eilidh McTavish from Elgin again this year and we managed to win the best gross with a score of 94.  Our playing partners Rebecca Riddell and her mum Clare from Royal Dornoch were in the lead for the best net with 79.5 until mother and daughter team, Kirsty and Karen McBeath from Forres came in with an excellent net score of 77.

Congratualtions to Anne Rose the junior organiser for making the day such a success and providing "goody bags" for each of the girls.

Many thanks to Torvean for allowing us courtesy of the course for the competition and to their lady captain Jacqueline Sinclair for all her help.

Finally our thanks go to Sally Rowan for very kindly sponsoring this event for the juniors.

Sammy Vass is Tops

What a pleasure it was to receive the following note from Ken Condon via Colin Farquharson.

"I went over for Radfords home tourney but it was cancelled due to snow!!  A hastily arranged friendly was organised for the following day at Gardner-Webb, and as it turned out, Kirsty was paired with Sammy Vass.  We couldn't have been made to feel more welcome, and Sammy's attitude, personality and demeanor on the course was apleasure!  She is a credit toher family, her University and her Country, so if you could pass this on I would be most grateful."

KELSEY TAKES BRITISH STUDENT'S TITLE

Congratulatons to Kelsey MacDonald who has just added another title to her collection.

At West Lancashire Golf Club last week Kelsey won the British Universities' Women's stroke play title beating Jane Turner from Craigielaw Golf Course and Robert Gorden University, Aberdeen by a magnificent margin of 17 shots.

Well done.

SAMMY VASS HELPS GARDNER-WEBB FINISH RUNNERS-UP

Well done to Sammy Vass who has found her feet as a sophomore transfer student at Gardner-Webb University, North Carolina in the 2010-2011 US college golf season ... capping her campaign by playing a big part in her college finishing second in the Big South Women's Conference Championship at The Patriot Golf Club, Ninety-six (yes, that's the name of the South Carolina town/city!) this past week.

Sammy's tied 10th place finish was just about her best performance over two years in the States, the first of which was spent as a fringe-team player at the University of Central Florida.
She had rounds of 81, 76 and 77 for a total of 234, finishing ahead of Radford University's pair of British students, Hannah Coles (15th on 238 with scores of 79-80-79) and fellow Scot Kristy Condon (27th on 245 with scores of 82-82-81).

Sammy and the rest of the Gardner-Webb University team were put under real pressure in the championship when one of their players went down with an illness at the end of the first day

Normally, a team counts only the best four scores from their five players. If you have only four players - as Gardner-Webb did for the last two rounds - then all of their scores count. Absolutely no margin for error.

Coastal Carolina won the Big South Women's Championship with a total of 912. Gardner-Webb were runners-up with 930 - a great performance by a comparatively small university.

Coaching at Nairn with Pat Smillie

Pat Smillie the England National Junior Girls' Coach for the last 15 years and Head Professional at Wilton Golf Club gave up her time last week to help raise funds for the county by hold coaching sessions for the ladies at Nairn Golf Club.  Pat who is a lifelong friend of Jane Rhodes the Lady Captain at Nairn Golf Club was pleased to help out when Jane suggested she come along for a "busman's holiday" and help raise funds for the county.  Although originally from Scotland Pat met Jane when they both played junior girls' county golf in Yorkshire.

Florence and Pat with the Wednesday coaching group

The coaching sessions took place on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th March with long game in the morning and short game in the afternoon.  Unfortunately Tuesday was a bit miserable when it rained for most of the day but no-one seemed to mind and enjoyed the sessions.  You will see from the photographs, which were taken on Wednesday, that the ladies enjoyed a much better day with sunshine most of the time.

We are indebted to Pat for giving up her time and raising £550 over the two days.  This was possible as she waived her normal coaching fee and refused to claim any expenses. WELL DONE PAT

Bridge Luncheon at Dornoch

The County would like to thank Marie Orr for once again hosting a Bridge Luncheon at her home in Dornoch to raise much needed funds for the county.  There were five tables of bridge players who all enjoyed the cards, the wonderful lunch provided by Marie and the afternoon tea with excellent cakes baked by her sister Jane.  Everyone brought a raffle prize and Marie provided prizes for the teams.  Over £300 was raised on the day which is much appreciated.
